A letter to you

Dear you,
(Yes, you – this isn’t a cryptic love letter to someone else. I’ve grown out of that.)

I’m sorry I didn't get to see you before leaving – I didn't get to see me either because I only finished summer school two days ago. Don’t you worry – I was punished by my 8-hour exam.

Moving quickly on, you have built a part of me that I will take to Switzerland for the year. Even across the ocean, I hope to celebrate with you when you have your own milestones, whether it’s through liking your post(s) on Facebook––I epitomise sincerity––or a Facebook message. Do add me on Skype (just search for my full name) and/or send me messages, and I will do my best to reply.

I write to you from my flight to Abu Dhabi, where I wasn’t compelled by my overdue post to pay for on-flight WiFi. And my, I had to resist every urge to watch Chris Hemsworth be moderately hot in the badly reviewed sequel to Thor. I did end up watching Gravity though.

Anyway, in my last post, I was silly to propose to write about car hire without having actually used the services, but that, of course, doesn’t justify a fortnight delay since I did mention I would post weekly (grossly unrealistic, in retrospect). I will write about car hire once I’ve actually care hire.

Etihad Airways has nothing on the Air New Zealand safety videos/pamphlets.

On a more pensive note, I’ve mentioned countlessly to others that the gravity of milestones like exchange hits me in waves. But yet, I’m calm on my way to Geneva itself, despite having left the best city in the world (no bias), my family, my love and, with it, some of the best people I know, yourself likely included. Only now, after a week of stress about exchange and summer school, have I resolved to follow a dear friend’s advice to think less and just do. Hold me to that resolution.

I must go – the smell of my in-flight meal beckons. Live well and be kind to each other – it is now, amongst other times, that I realise how fortunate we are to have each other.

Yours truly,
Darren
